Getting Started

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Beginning therapy is an important step, and it's natural to have questions about what to expect. Whether this is your first experience with therapy or you're returning after time away, our goal is to make the process as comfortable and straightforward as possible.

From your first phone call to your first appointment, we strive to create a welcoming, respectful, and supportive experience where you can begin your journey at a pace that feels right for you.

You don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out. We're here to help guide you through each step.

Step 1: Schedule a Discovery Call

A Discovery Call is often the best place to begin.

This brief conversation gives you an opportunity to ask questions, learn more about our practice, and discuss what you're looking for in therapy. We'll also answer any questions you have about services, scheduling, or the process of becoming a client.

A Discovery Call is not a therapy session; it is a simple phone call, and there is no obligation to begin services afterward. It is simply an opportunity to determine whether Journey Forth MHC is the right fit for your needs.

Step 2: Complete Your Intake Forms

Once your first appointment has been scheduled, you'll receive secure electronic paperwork to complete before your visit.

The intake forms help us learn more about you and may include:

Completing these forms ahead of time allows us to spend more of your appointment focused on getting to know you rather than completing paperwork.

Step 3: Your Initial Assessment

Your first appointment is an opportunity for you and your therapist to begin getting to know one another.

During this session, we'll talk about what brings you to therapy, your current concerns, your personal history, and what you hope to gain from treatment. We'll also answer any questions you may have about therapy and discuss how we can best support your goals.

There is no expectation that you share everything during your first appointment. Therapy is a process that develops over time, and we will move at a pace that feels comfortable and respectful for you.

The goal of the first visit is not to solve everything in one session. It is to begin building a therapeutic relationship and create a foundation for future work together.

Step 4: Creating a Plan Together

At the end of your first visit, you and your therapist will begin developing a plan that reflects your individual needs and goals.

Together, you may discuss:

Therapy is a collaborative process. Your voice, preferences, and goals are an important part of developing a plan that works for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the first appointment?

Your Initial Assessment is typically longer than a regular therapy session to allow enough time to discuss your history, current concerns, and goals for treatment.

What if I don't know what to say?

That's completely okay.

Many people come to therapy knowing they want things to feel different but aren't sure how to explain what they're experiencing. Your therapist will guide the conversation and help you explore what's bringing you in.

Do I have to talk about traumatic experiences during my first appointment?

No.

You are never expected to discuss anything before you feel ready. Building trust and creating a sense of safety are important parts of therapy, and we will move at a pace that feels appropriate for you.

What if I'm nervous?

Feeling nervous before your first appointment is completely normal.

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and many people share those same feelings. Our goal is to provide a supportive environment where you can feel heard, respected, and comfortable asking questions.

Can I choose my therapist?

Yes, to the extent that some therapists see certain clients, like teens, children, or those with DID while others do not have that specialization.

You are welcome to request a specific therapist or explore our Meet the Team page to learn more about each clinician's background and areas of focus. If you're unsure who might be the best fit, we're happy to help guide you based on your needs and preferences.
