Understanding Mobile Crisis Teams
Many New York counties offer Mobile Crisis Teams, which are trained mental health professionals who can respond in the community when someone is experiencing a behavioral health crisis.
Depending on the situation, Mobile Crisis Teams may:
Assess the immediate situation.
Provide emotional support and crisis intervention.
Help de-escalate the crisis.
Develop a safety plan.
Connect individuals with ongoing mental health or substance use services.
Coordinate with emergency responders when necessary.
Whenever possible, Mobile Crisis Teams aim to provide support in the least restrictive environment and help individuals remain safely in their homes or communities.
Supporting a Loved One Through a Crisis
If someone you care about is struggling, you don't have to navigate the situation alone.
Consider the following steps:
Stay calm and listen without judgment.
Ask direct, caring questions if you're concerned about their safety.
Encourage them to call or text 988, or offer to make the call with them.
If they are in immediate danger or unable to keep themselves safe, call 911.
Continue offering support after the immediate crisis has passed.
Remember, you are not expected to have all the answers. Reaching out for professional help is a sign of strength and compassion.
