When Should I Call 911 vs. 988?
Call 911 if:
There is an immediate threat to life or safety.
Someone has attempted suicide or is actively harming themselves.
A medical emergency requires immediate attention.
Someone is experiencing a behavioral health crisis that cannot be managed safely without emergency responders.
Call or Text 988 if:
You're experiencing thoughts of suicide.
You're feeling emotionally overwhelmed or in crisis.
You're worried about a friend or family member.
You're struggling with anxiety, depression, overwhelming stress, substance use concerns, or another mental health crisis.
You need immediate emotional support but emergency medical services are not required.
Trained crisis counselors are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide confidential support and connect callers with local resources when appropriate.

Warm Lines (Non-Crisis Peer Support)
Warm lines are different from crisis hotlines. They provide compassionate, peer-based support for individuals who may be feeling lonely, overwhelmed, anxious, or in need of someone to talk to before a crisis develops.
These services are not intended for emergencies but can be an excellent resource for ongoing emotional support. We have included both New York and national options later in this guide.
